Paid Search:
What the Data Actually Says

A clear summary of the paid search conversation: return visits, HubSpot contacts, SMART Goals progression, and the cross-campus question.

Core question
Does paid search put us on higher-ed agency consideration lists?
1 / 11
The real question

This is not just a “did paid search close deals?” question.

The reason we buy paid search is to be present when someone searches for terms like “higher education marketing agency,” “education marketing agency,” or “higher education SEO.”

What we want paid search to do

Get Search Influence onto consideration lists when higher-ed prospects are actively looking for an agency.

What we need the data to show

Not only direct closes, but whether paid search brings the right schools into our ecosystem and whether they later return, convert, or progress.

Important correction from the chat: we do not run branded paid search. This analysis is about non-brand, agency-intent paid search.

Method

We looked at paid search through three lenses.

1. Return behavior

GA4 first-touch paid search users: do they come back, and how do they come back?

2. Contact quality

HubSpot contacts created from paid search, joined to SMART Goals for real funnel progression.

3. School-level influence

Whether one person at a school researched via paid search and another person at the same school later progressed.

SMART Goals is the funnel-stage source of truth here. HubSpot lifecycle stage overstates progression, so it is not used as the final funnel answer.

Return visits

Paid search visitors do return, but most do not.

25%of paid-search first-touch users returned in the 180-day GA4 view
76%of paid-search first-touch users did not return at all
18hard lead events from paid-search first-touch users in 180 days
The consideration-list hypothesis is partially supported: some people do come back after a paid search visit. But the returning group is a minority.

HubSpot + SMART Goals

Paid search created 45 HubSpot contacts. Seven became scored leads.

45HubSpot contacts from paid search over the last 365 days
7matched SMART Goals / scored-leads records
38never made it into scored-leads tracking
Of the 7 scored leads: 6 are MQL-only, 1 reached Proposal, and 0 are Closed Won in the analyzed window.

Progression detail

The one real proposal is William James College.

11/19/2025Katie O’Hare enters as a Paid Search SQL through the Interested in Working With Us form.
11/19/2025Same day, she reconverts through UPCEA Email / AI Search Research Study.
12/11/2025Sales Outreach creates another SQL touch through meeting setup.
12/17/2025Discovery is booked via UPCEA Email.
1/8/2026Proposal is sent via UPCEA Email.
Plain-language read: paid search opened the door. UPCEA Email and Sales Outreach moved the opportunity forward.

The campus-level question

Looking across the same school changes the story, but only a little.

9paid-search-touched education orgs found in HubSpot / SMART Goals
4schools had another contact show later scored activity
0schools had another contact later reach SQL, Discovery, Proposal, or Closed Won
Cross-campus lift exists, but in this data it is MQL-only. It supports awareness/nurture more than hidden pipeline.

School examples

Where paid search touched one person and the school later showed activity.

School
Paid-search touch
What happened later
University of Louisville
Kelly / Kelly Pyne
Other contacts later had MQL activity: Sara Morris, Laura Dorman, Kristen Brown, Lauren Bae, Stephen Swan II.
Sonoran University of Health Sciences
Jonette Pettyjohn
Janet Zhou-Wilt later had MQL activity through website referral, direct, and email.
Saint Louis University
Joselyn Howell
Sara Gulbrandsen and Evan Richards later had MQL activity. SLU also had pre-existing SQL+ activity before this paid-search touch.
San Diego State University
Tim Grenda
Tim reached Discovery; other SDSU contacts later had MQL activity. Tim also had a prior Sales Outreach SQL touch.

Tracking issue

Google Ads is counting far more “conversions” than sales can act on.

741Google Ads-reported conversions over the earlier 365-day analysis
45actual HubSpot contacts from paid search
1real proposal in SMART Goals from the paid-search-origin cohort
The tracking audit is urgent. Google Ads should optimize toward real lead actions, not engagement events that inflate conversion volume.

What this means

The honest read: paid search has a role, but the role is narrower than the platform numbers imply.

What is working

Paid search is reaching some right-fit higher-ed searches and schools. It can create consideration-list entry and nurture opportunities.

What is not proven

The last-year data does not show paid search quietly producing many later-stage opportunities through other campus contacts.

How to judge it

Measure paid search as a consideration and nurture channel first, then hold it accountable for real MQL, Discovery, Proposal, and Closed Won movement.

Current data: 45 HubSpot paid-search contacts; 7 scored leads; 1 proposal; 0 closed won.

10 / 11
Bottom line
Paid search deserves a measured role: it can get us onto higher-ed consideration lists, but right now the evidence supports awareness and nurture more than strong direct pipeline production.

Recommended next steps: clean up Google Ads conversion goals, keep only real lead actions as primary conversions, strengthen paid landing page CTAs, and track school-level progression for paid-search-touched universities.
